Be the change you wish to see in the world.

Hello world =]

"I, Brieanna Scolaro, am whole-heartedly committed to creating an open minded, empowering world where others are eager to share their gifts and help others realize their full potential, thus creating a never ending cycle of inspiration and light"

That is my vision. That is what I stand for, and where my choices, words, actions all stem from

With each passing day, instead of finding myself I create myself.

The following blog hosts my thoughts, photography, and inspirational postings I find throughout my adventures.

Never forget, You're Beautiful.

Love, Brie Scolaro

Resetting my body and mind

I will be spending my time from graduation to leaving for Americorps with resetting my body and mind. This involves strengthening me both physically and mentally. Part of me wants to do this so I can create a good foundation for the next year or so with Americorps. Another part wants to create a foundation for the rest of my life. The other part of me wants to rebel against society and the toxins it has put into my body - toxins that are both physical like alcohol and processed foods, and mental like ideas of constantly being on facebook, having a smart phone, being constantly connected, etc. I want my body to run off my body and my mind to be influenced by my inner strength. So here are a few things I look forward to working on the day after I move back home for the summer.

1. Drinking the recommended amount of water per day

2. Avoid toxins - alcohol, tobacco, high fructose corn syrup

3. No coffee, no soda

4. optimal sleep - waking at the same time everyday

5. Atleast 20 minutes of cardio per day, along with some strength training

6. acknowledging and dieting for my blood type

7. No snack food and crap in the house

8. Healthy snacks options always ready

9. Relaxation/Meditation each day

10. Stretching each day

11. multiple cups of tea per day, and buying a nice tea set to enjoy it in

12. growing some of my own plants/crops to take care of

13. looking into spirituality

14. reflecting on my day each night before bed

15. spend limited time in front of any screen (t.v, computer, phone) etc

16. healthy diet - lean meat, fresh fruits and vegetables

17. New recipes and getting into cooking - ingredient of choice each week

I know doing all of these things would be hard. But I am confident if I did these things, that I would feel better both mentally and physically. My body would thank me. I would feel more wholesome. In time, maybe I will be able to say i have accomplished all these things. The only thing stopping me is myself.

Those of you in the world of facebook know this - but I have been accepted into the Americorps NCCC - placed even. I recieved an email, saying that I will be shipped out to Vinton, Iowa on August 28th for 10 months, not to return home except for the holidays until June. I could not be more excited for this adventure. And I intend to blog every step of the way. Blogging will be so important for all of us going out with this inaugural crew of Femacorps members. All eyes will be on us, even President Obama watching. They tell us that we are to receive a military style duffle bag in the mail. The only things we can bring with us on this 10 month journey are the things we can fit into a small carry on of our choice and into this duffle bag. Everything that I bring with me will be picked with intention. The rest of my clothes back at home, I aim to donate to those who really need them. When it comes down to it, you really can live off of the clothes and supplies you bring in a small duffle bag. If only people really lived like this - I cannot wait to - living with only the essentials, some blankets, a kindle, a journal, some running shorts. Definitely pictures, of me and my mom - dad, step dad, bella. This whole adventure is really so much more than a 10 month term. It’s what im choosing to do after graduation. Choosing the most selfless act that I can think of, but at the same time a very selfish one. I want to live in my own way, with my own people. People with values similar to mine. I aim for a feeling of family like that I feel with the UDab crew at UD - These are the people I want to surround my life. A pool from which I will eventually find someone to love and to love me in return. And my friends, my girl, my family - they will all understand what it means to truly give. And to truly live.

Be confident in the direction that you choose… thoughts post-interview

Public Allies Logo

Today I had an interview for a job that can lead me into the real world - Public Allies Delaware. I don’t want to sit here and random about my interview or answers, but I do want to mention a few things I learned today:

1) Be confident in the direction that you choose. No matter which way you’re going, experience everything to the fullest. Live with your heart, but be aware of your mind

2) When you’re being interviewed, speak from the heart. Be true to yourself. Don’t try to make yourself seem better than you are. If you live life in integrity you shouldn’t have to worry about this

3) Talk to everyone. Whether they are people sitting in the lobby with you, the receptionist, or an old person in the elevator, make sure you say hi to everyone. You never know who you could meet or who will remember you later on (today I spontaneously introduced myself to two board members as well as a filmmaker/documentary/commercial producer)

4) If the people interviewing you leave time at the end to ask questions, make sure you ask them some questions. Ask them something they have learned about themselves through working with the program, or how they got to where they are. As an interviewer myself, I remember people more/am surprised more when my applicants turn questions to me

5) Wear a smile. Of course you need to look professional, shower, dress nicely. But a smile will really finish your outfit. Your friends and family will support you in any direction that you choose so be happy about where you are headed to!

6) Also be aware of what you can say or do in between the lines. They will ask you questions, and you will answer. You will look professional because you have to. Talk about other things you have done. Are you using, “like” or “um” a lot? Are you actually taking the time to think about your answers. Are you looking at your phone or your watch a lot? Evaluate your posture - are you sitting up straight, slouching in the chair? If you’re nervous, are you holding onto your chair or legs? Breathe, Relax, and Smile.

7) Drop some memorable quotes or phrases that relate to your life. You aren’t the only one they are interviewing so be memorable!  I usually talk about “being the change I wish to see in the world” and “sharing the gift that is me with the world” My teacher once told me to incorporate ninjas or monkeys into any interview or application - you don’t have to take it that far, but def. let yourself stand out and shine brightly.

I hope you all have a wonderful wednesday. Say hi to a stranger - call someone you normally just text. Text someone that you normally don’t. Buy a strangers coffee, or walk a different way to class to experience different things.

You Are Beautiful

In life, there are maximizers and there are satisficers. Maximizers are those who want to make the very best choice among all alternatives. A satisficer is one who is content to make the good enough choice. Maximizers tend to actually savor positive events less than satisficers and do not cope well with negative events. It takes longer for them to return to their subjective well being and they tend to ruminate more that satisficers. But who wins in the long run? Hmmm…

What time in one’s life do you think you they will be happiest? Youth? Adolescence? College? Working Years? Old Age? studies show that happiness is actually pretty baseline across age, contrary to what I even thought! To increase your happiness, be happy where you are! Appreciate the now. Change your habits, change your attitude. Yeah, happiness may be 50% heritable but the rest is up to you. What thoughts are you choosing to stick to you? -A lesson from Positive Psychology
There will probably be a ton more of these, since I’m reviewing for a quiz. Teehehe.
